The Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) is made up of over 160,000 volunteer donors and there are also over 10,000 cord blood units available for searching.

Through the international cooperative search relationships, the ABMDR and international registries exchange de-identified donor information in an effort to expand the patient possibilities.

Some of the registries that the ABMDR has relationships with are listed in a worldwide database, the Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide(BMDW). Patients who initiate a preliminary search of the ABMDR have access to this database, which contains donor typings from over 50 countries including Australia. This database of donor tissue types is compiled by the Europdonor Foundation, in Leiden, The Netherlands. When the preliminary search is done, the registries are searched through BMDW, however, the ABMDR submits search requests directly to individual registries at the direction of transplant centre coordinators.

The ABMDR is also a member of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA). The WMDA works to ensure high quality haemopoietic stem cells (HSC) are available for patients worldwide and to protect HSC donors across borders.

Over 12 million people have joined the bone marrow registries and there are over 180,000 cord blood units stored world wide.
