Patient information

Each year many Australians are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses where bone marrow transplant is their best treatment option.

Most patients who need a transplant don’t have a matching donor in their family and depend on the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) to find a donor.

The Australian Government funds the ABMDR, which searches for suitably matched donors and umbilical cord blood units so that patients who need a transplant can find a match. More information on the Bone Marrow Transplant Program can be found on the Commonwealth’s Department of Health website.

The patient section and the patient brochure explain basic information about bone marrow transplants and the donor search process.
